The Fall of Shadowfell Keep
After the establishment of Aecris Hold, all was quiet for a time. Sir Keegan and his family, and the Scale garrison left to safeguard the rift, lived in relative peace. Sir Keegan, however, was continually plagued by horrifying nightmares of his family being violently murdered and a great evil crawling through the rift to devour the souls of all within the Hold. Soon after the birth of his second child, these dreams – coupled with the corruptive influence of the nearby rift – proved too much for Keegan’s psyche, and the man went insane, murdering his family has they slept and proceeding to kill as many of the Scale soldiers as he could before they organized and left Aecris Hold, securing it to prevent Keegan’s escape. Some went to the nearest Imperial listening post and filed a disturbing report of Keegan’s deed – eyewitness reports tell of Keegan murmuring that he was saving all of the Keep’s residents as he went about his methodical slaughter, and of his superhuman strength as he did so.
The Scale sent a much larger contingent to secure the Keep against Keegan’s escape; after some weeks went by, they opened the doors to investigate, and found Sir Keegan’s corpse slumped by the shrine of Bahamut in the catacombs, apparently dead by a self-inflicted wound. Sir Keegan was lay to rest just beyond the shrine, and the Scale contingent sealed the keep and departed.
Keegan’s spirit did not rest comfortably, though – in the years since the Fall, Keegan has been responsible for protecting the keep against many of the evil creatures that came, drawn by the rift’s power. However, with the coming of Kalarel, a powerful disciple of Tiamat, a curse was laid on Keegan’s tomb, stopping him from passing beyond the areas sanctified by Bahamut, preventing him from hindering Kalarel’s work at the rift. He did, however, rise one more time to Squad 7, and after satisfying himself that Squad 7 was attempting to stop Kalarel and his dark rituals, told them the story of the Fall and entrusted them with Aecris, his longsword.
